In 1991, she took art studio classes at the University of California at Santa Barbara, while considering an advanced degree in art. At UCSB, Katherine was impressed with the paintings of one of the speakers for a colloquium class. The artist was Hiroko Yoshimoto, who painted large abstract paintings and taught at Ventura College. Katherine signed up for a watercolor class from Hiroko, not because she wanted to paint in watercolor, but because she wanted to take a class from Hiroko. After that class Katherine was hooked on watercolors and has painted with them ever since. She is now also painting plein air in oils in and around the Bay Area. After living in Southern California for twenty years, in 2005 Katherine relocated to the Bay Area and now lives in Woodside with her husband, a scientist who works at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center.
